Chemistry on the Go

Since the International Year of Chemical Event 2011 had started, the mobile science lab vehicle program has carried on for a decade. During this time, the mobile science lab toured all over Taiwan and it’s outlying islands, including Kinmen, Matsu, Lanyu, Xiaoliuqiu, and so on. Also, the areas that had suffered major disasters such as Namasia, Baolai, and Taoyuan in Kaohsiung, etc., have our footprints every year.

Every time Chemistry on the Go holds a program on campus, kids always open up to us, participate in experiments and performances with all their passions, constantly circling around team members with all kinds of questions. The mobile science lab program of “Chemistry on the Go’’ always prioritizes students in rural and under-resourced areas of Taiwan. Moreover, we prioritize middle school students considering high school students have much heavier pressure because of the college entrance examination, and primary school students have less chemical background knowledge.

In 2016 analyst lab vehicle became a part of the group, planning a popularization of science program that targets high school students and science clubs by making an environmental analysis during teaching, which allowed “Chemistry on the Go’’ to fully upgrade into a fleet, designing different levels of activities for all different types of groups. “Chemistry on the Go’’ has accomplished holding over 600 events within its ten-year tour. After the new syllabus is implemented and the changes of our education environment, maybe we can energize a new wave of hands-on experiments, which we believe would increase the number of people to participate.

“Chemistry on the Go’’ was demonstrated by mini popular science lectures, combining chemical popular science experiments with chemical analysis experiments, allowing students to know chemistry in different perspectives and interpretations. In popular science lecture, we put together current events, history, life, industry, and chemical research results to combine what students learned from their books and what happened in life by telling a story, while experimental demonstration combines the color changing effect of chemical experiment with talk show, makes students easily interact with the stage, and bring the reaction of chemical experiment to the audience. Hands-on experiment simplifies the equipment and experimental procedure by using materials that are easily found in our life, giving students a chance to operate the experiments themselves and bring home their works. From complex to simple, from classical experiments to modern instrument analysis, chemical analysis experiments train students to understand the logic of science research step by step, and analyze all kinds of resources in our environment by themselves. After taking part in “Chemistry on the Go’’, students will have the ability to demonstrate and explain everything they learn from the program; therefore, these contagious campus life experiences will spread the knowledge of chemistry to the whole family imperceptibly.

“Chemistry on the Go’’ emphasized the combination of chemistry and life over and over again, after wrapping up the programs in age-appropriate ways. Hopefully not only could we turn around the prejudice normally people have for chemistry, but also can constantly remind participants what they had learned in the program when they see chemistry-related events on the news, internet, and media, and always keep a proper and logical perspective to face the issues in this world.
